Hunting Teams

Hunting in Japan is a team activity. Groups spread out across ridges and valleys, often with limited visibility and no cell coverage. Reliable communication between team members is a safety requirement.

The challenge

Hunting teams face specific communication problems:

  • Members spread across 2-5 km of mountainous terrain
  • Dense forest blocks line-of-sight between positions
  • Dog handlers need to track dogs independently while staying in touch with the team
  • Weather and terrain change quickly
  • Safety requires knowing where every team member is at all times

Traditional solutions include handheld radios (which require licenses for higher power), Dog Navi units (for dog tracking), and Garmin dog collars. Each has strengths, but none provides the combination of text messaging, GPS sharing, and mesh networking that Meshtastic offers.

How Meshtastic fits in

Meshtastic gives hunting teams:

  • Real-time position sharing between all team members on a shared map
  • Text messaging for silent coordination (important when sound discipline matters)
  • Mesh relay so members behind ridges can still communicate through intermediate devices
  • No subscription fees and no cell coverage needed - browse devices in the shop

Meshtastic does not replace dog tracking devices. Dog Navi and Garmin collars are purpose-built for tracking fast-moving dogs with high update rates. But for team-to-team communication, Meshtastic fills a gap that other tools leave open.

Channels:

  • Channel 1: Private team channel (all members)
  • Channel 0: Default mesh (in case other Meshtastic users are in the area)

Communication protocol

Before the hunt:

  1. All devices named and tested
  2. Private channel shared via QR code
  3. Check-in interval agreed (every 10-15 minutes for moving members)
  4. Emergency procedure agreed (three rapid messages = emergency)

During the hunt:

  • Silent text messages for coordination ("moving to position B")
  • Position sharing shows everyone's location on the map
  • Team leader monitors positions and sends instructions as needed

Practical considerations

  • Battery life matters. A full day in the field requires careful power management. See Battery and Power.
  • Cold weather reduces battery capacity. Keep the device close to your body in winter.
  • Label devices clearly. Multiple identical devices get confusing quickly.
  • Firmware should match across the team. Update all devices together before the season starts. See Firmware Updates.

Limitations

  • Meshtastic is not a dog tracking device. For tracking dogs, use Dog Navi or Garmin dog collars.
  • In very dense forest with deep valleys, range can drop below 1 km. Place a relay device on a high point if possible.
  • Meshtastic is a communication tool, not a safety device. Carry appropriate emergency equipment for your area.
